=== [Vorangehende Verhandlung der Sitzung auf Band EICHMANN TRIAL // SESSION 082.03 / 087.01 / 070.00 / 073.03 / 075.01 / 29-JUN-1961 / 06-JUL-1961 / 08-JUN-1961 / 12-JUN-1961 / 20-JUN-1961 / [ET] (VT EI204) [ET], 38'15''-46'40'']
- 0053 Hausner: Marta approached the Hungarians and told them, she advised them that they should ask to be tattooed
- 0100 Hausner: Human relations among the workers, among the prisoners, can you say something about that?
- 0103 Kagan: In this hell of Auschwitz, we, for our part, remained alive owing to the fact that there was friendship between us, however strange that may seem. In this place, there was friendship, and there were many instances of solidarity. This was not the case everywhere. The differences were considerable. In a Kommando where there was a collaborator, such as our Kapo, in the Politische Abteilung and in the Standesamt
- 0135 Hausner: But within the unit that you knew?
- 0138 Kagan: In our unit, we dragged typhus patients with a forty degree temperature, we dragged them to the office so that they should not remain in the camp, so that they should not be included in a selection
- 0155 Hausner: Is that what kept you going, a solidarity of human relationships, friendship and mutual help?
- 0158 Kagan: And devotion which knew no bounds
- 0207 Landau: Dr. Servatius, do you have any additional questions relating to these last questions?
- 0211 Servatius: I have no questions
- 0213 Landau: Thank you very much, Mrs. Kagan, you have concluded your testimony
- 0225 Hausner: I call the next witness, Mrs. Esther Goldstein, and I would request Exhibit No. T/1118
- 0402 Hausner: Are you a member of Kibbutz Kfar Ruppin?
- 0406 Goldstein: Yes
- 0411 Hausner: In 1944, you were deported to Auschwitz from detention in Katzow, which is in Carpatho-Russia?
- 0419 Goldstein: Yes
- 0426Landau: Was this Hungarian territory?
- 0428 Goldstein: Yes
- 0447 Hausner: Which members of your family accompanied you?
- 0448 Goldstein: My father, my mother, my three sisters, a married sister with her two children, and my brother
- 0514 Hausner: Who, of all these, remained alive?
- 0519 Goldstein: My sisters and my brother remained alive
- 0527 Hausner: One of the sisters had two children did they survive?
- 0530 Goldstein: No
- 0538 Hausner: I have here a set of photographs which are included in Exhibit T/1118. This is about the holocaust of Slovakian Jewry. With the Court's permission, I shall mark the photographs which the witness will be able to identify. May I approach the witness?
- 0555 Landau: Certainly
- 0604 Hausner: Can you identify yourself in this photograph?
- 0606 Goldstein: Yes
- 0608 Hausner: Where are you?
- 0610 Goldstein: In the middle, with a white kerchief
- 0615 Hausner: Can you identify anyone else in the photograph?
- 0620 Goldstein: My sisters
- 0632 Hausner: We shall mark these photographs in the album which we have already submitted In this photograph, can you identify anyone?
- 0640 Goldstein: My father, our doctor, Dr. Kellermann, our pharmacist Belsher, another pharmacist Weishaus, the owner of the grocery store Sager
- 0725 Hausner: Do you recognize them in this photograph?
- 0728 Goldstein: Yes
- 0730 Hausner: Whom do you recognize in this photograph that I show you now?
- 0733 Goldstein: Kornfeld a neighbour of ours; he was conscripted into an Hungarian labour camp, he came on leave, was injured, and was also taken away with us. Here is Mr. Kramer, the owner of a grocery store, and Mr. Roth owner of an iron store
- 0822 Hausner: Where were these three photographs that I have just shown you taken?
- 0824 Goldstein: The photograph in which I appear, I remember, was taken after the selection in Auschwitz
- 0834 Hausner: Do you remember when the photograph was taken?
- 0835 Goldstein: Yes
- 0836 Hausner: Who took it?
- 0837 Goldstein: A German in SS uniform
- 0845 Hausner: And where were the other two photographs taken?
- 0848 Goldstein: I cannot say
- 0852 Hausner: From the surroundings, does it tell you anything?
- 0854 Goldstein: That it is next to the railway station in Auschwitz, for they travelled together with us
- 0902 Landau: Do these photographs appear in the album?
- 0906 Hausner: Yes, Your Honour, we have marked here the places where they appear. We can hand the Court these photographs which the witness has identified, and perhaps the book will also be before the Court
- 1155 Landau: I have marked these three photographs T/1333, T/1334, T/1335. Was the witness in this photograph?

- 1235 Goldstein: Yes
- 1248 Landau: Where is he in these pictures?
- 1254 Hausner: In photograph No. 2, marked with three X's. We shall mark him here with an X
- 1310 Landau: With glasses?
- 1313 Goldstein: Yes
- 1322 Landau: This photograph will be marked T/1336 This last photograph is not in the book?
- 1322 Hausner: I think all the photographs are in the book. We took them from the book and enlarged them. In this picture, you are not able to identify anyone, but can you recognize the place?
- 1425 Goldstein: I can also recognize the women here are the Shmilowitz sisters and the Miller sisters from our village. Four Miller sisters
- 1503 Hausner: Did they arrive together with you, in the same transport?
- 1505 Goldstein: Yes
- 1506 Hausner: Is this the place where the selection was made?
- 1507 Goldstein: Yes
- 1515 Hausner: In this photograph, are you able to recognize the two girls who can be seen in the front of the picture?
- 1520 Goldstein: I don't remember their names, but these were twins, also from our village
- 1532 Hausner: Did they also arrive with you?
- 1534 Goldstein: Yes
- 1538 Landau: The two photographs will be marked T/1337, T/1338
- 1648 Hausner: Is this what a women's roll-call in Auschwitz looked like? Is that correct?
- 1652 Goldstein: Correct, but that was not our camp
- 1657 Hausner: But in your camp, too, it looked like that?
- 1658 Goldstein: Yes
- 1735 Landau: This photograph will be marked T/1339

- 1811 Goldstein: Yes
- 1847 Landau: This photograph will be marked T/1340
- 1853 Hausner: Is that how the camp looked before the selection?
- 1900 Goldstein: Near the railway
- 1921 Landau: This photograph will be marked T/1341
- 1942 Hausner: Was that also near the railway, after your arrival?
- 1947 Goldstein: Yes
- 1948 Hausner: How long did you stand like this, as shown here in the picture?
- 1950 Goldstein: Not for long
- 2014 Landau: This photograph will be marked T/1342
- 2018 Hausner: Where is this?
- 2022 Goldstein: Near the railway, before the selection
- 2058 Landau: This photograph will be marked T/1343
- 2104 Hausner: Is this fence which appears here behind the people familiar to you?
- 2110 Goldstein: Yes, it is an electrified fence with high tension
- 2114 Hausner: Was this the high tension electrified fence of Auschwitz?
- 2120 Goldstein: Yes
- 2232 Landau: This photograph will be marked T/1344. Is this photograph also in the book?
- 2245 Hausner: All of them are in the book. If there should be any difficulty, we can point it out to Mr Bodenheimer during the recess And finally, this photograph. Can you recognize anyone?
- 2313 Goldstein: I recognize a woman here, but I cannot give you her name, since I don't remember
- 2315 Hausner: Is she from your village?

- 2353 Hausner: She recognized a girl who worked with her in the hospital in the Katzow Ghetto. I have marked her with an X Mrs. Goldstein, of all these people whom you have identified in these photographs, who survived after the War? Witness
- 2514 Goldstein: My brother and my sisters
- 2525 Hausner: Of all those whom you recognized in the photographs?
- 2527 Goldstein: I know of one only, whose name was Kramer
- 2530 Hausner: Just that man?
- 2532 Goldstein: I am not aware of anybody else
- 2537 Hausner: You were taken off the freight cars, you were told to leave your personal effects behind?
- 2543 Goldstein: Yes
- 2547 Hausner: Who gave the orders?
- 2550 Goldstein: An SS man
- 2558 Hausner: Were the women separated from the men?
- 2602 Goldstein: Yes
- 2603 Hausner: Did the women and children stand together?
- 2604 Goldstein: Yes
- 2607 Hausner: Did your sister hold her daughter a baby and her son, who was five years old?
- 2613 Goldstein: Yes
- 2618 Hausner: An SS man camp up to your sister and asked her
- 2624 Goldstein: My mother was standing near us. He asked her whether she was our mother, and she said yes. Then he said to her: "Give the children to your mother." She said: "No, they are mine, I will not hand them over." There was an argument Afterwards, he called to a prisoner in prisoner's garb to translate for her, possibly in Yiddish, perhaps she would understand better. Then he said to her: "If you want to live, give your children to your mother." She said: "No, they are mine, I will not hand them over." Then the SS man came up to her, took the little girl and gave her to my mother, and he took the boy also by force
- 2713 Hausner: And they are no longer alive?
- 2714 Goldstein: No
- 2715 Hausner: Nor your mother?
- 2716 Goldstein: No
- 2726 Hausner: Were you in Camp C, in Birkenau?
- 2729 Goldstein: Yes
- 2731 Hausner: How many women were there in the whole block?
- 2733 Goldstein: One thousand women
- 2749 Hausner: Once a week, the notorious roll-call by Dr. Mengele took place for you?
- 2757 Goldstein: About once a week. When a rumour reached us that Mengele was coming, there was panic. We stood there, and we had to undress
- 2808 Hausner: You stood there naked?
- 2809 Goldstein: Naked. We pinched our lips, so that somehow we should look healthy
- 2816 Hausner: You mean your cheeks?
- 2817 Landau: Your lips or your cheeks?
- 2820 Goldstein: The cheeks. And he would select the weak ones or the thin ones
- 2831 Hausner: To be gassed?
- 2832 Goldstein: Yes
- 2834 Hausner: Did something else happen at the time of that selection? Was there some music?
- 2840 Goldstein: Once a selection took place, it took almost the whole day, and then an orchestra was present. They played for us the whole day. That was when there was a much larger selection
- 2852 Hausner: Was there a woman who assisted Dr. Mengele?
- 2856 Goldstein: Yes. Her name was Brechsler
- 2902 Hausner: Her name has already been mentioned in the evidence of the doctor yesterday

- 2924 Hausner: There were Blockaelteste of various kinds in Auschwitz, I understand. There were good ones and evil ones?
- 2931 Goldstein: Yes, but most of them were good
- 2938 Hausner: Most of them were good?
- 2940 Goldstein: Yes.
- 2948 Hausner: How did you live? One thousand women in the block?
- 2950 Goldstein: There were a thousand women in the block twelve women in one bunk. There was only room to lie on one's side, head and feet protruding, and when one turned over, all the eleven others had to turn over. We received our food in one dish for twelve people, without spoons, without cups, twelve people eating from one dish. We counted the sips, so that one should not drink more than the next
3030 Landau: Dr. Servatius, do you have any questions?
- 3034 Servatius: No, I have no questions to the witness
- 3038 Raveh: Were you given a number?
- 3039 Goldstein: No
- 3043 Raveh: On what date did you arrive?
- 3045 Goldstein: We arrived in May 1944; we were there for three months, and in August we left Auschwitz
- 3054 Raveh: All those who arrived with you did not get numbers?
- 3059 Goldstein: They did not get them. At that time no
- 3104 Landau: Mrs. Goldstein, you have concluded your testimony. Thank you very much. We can adjourn now. After the recess, you may show the films. The public will not be permitted to be present, apart from journalists, and, in addition, we have been asked to allow official observers of foreign governments to view this screening, and we shall permit that
- 3153 Hausner: Perhaps I may be permitted to request permission for the attendance of the director of Yad Vashem and a number of researchers, whose names we shall submit to the Court during the reces
- 3208 Landau: How many are there?
- 3210 Hausner: A small number
- 3211 Landau: Very well, we shall also allow that
