Abstract

The film deals with the subject of the anti-semitic pogroms in turn-of -the-century Russia, in which the few remaining jewish "shtetl" were destroyed: In the Ukrainean village of Antonowka there is only one jewish familiy the milk-man Motl Rabinowitsch, his wife, mother and daughter. None of the Russians nor Ukraineans are bothered by the fact that they are jews. On the contrary, they all live in peace together. Suddenly the village policeman receives orders to stage a pogrom in Antonowka. Motl, who is well respected, suggests faking one. In fact, however, they get word that an angry mob is on ist way to Antonowka.
