Abstract

The film shows the deception campaign by the Nazis for which Theresienstadt was the stage from the end of 1941 until April 1945. Actually a transit camp for Auschwitz, Theresienstadt was arranged as a Jewish settlement area to impress an international committee, and was eventually used as a setting for a propaganda film which deceived the world public regarding the conditions there. Upon the order of the SS, Jews had to create this film in 1944 before they too were deported to Auschwitz. In talking about the background to this film, the start of which was believed to be missing until recently, historian Karel Margry shows how the public and the Jews themselves were led astray by threadbare and yet effective deception maneuvers. There are also conversations with survivors, drawings of prisoners, photographs and documents which reveal life in the ghetto. Aerial photographs of Theresienstadt, now called Terezin, are added.
