Abstract |
The film is structured around three survivors from Auschwitz concentration camp who talk about their lives following their incarceration. The three people are connected by the fact that they survived Theresienstadt and Auschwitz as children or youths. They are: Gerhard Durlacher, who has applied his knowledge as a sociologist to the problem of surviving. Jehuda Bacon who has been Professor for Painting in Jerusalem since 1958 and who was witness at the Eichmann and Auschwitz trials and Ruth Klüger who lived with her mother nearby Displaced Person Camps in Germany until 1948 and then emigrated to the USA. Today she is a Professor of German literature. The cultural basis of the Jewish people has been completely destroyed in Europe. There was no home for them any more and whole families had been murdered and survivors were often the only family members left alive. There are two elements to this film: survivors' stories, historical footage of the liberation of the camps, Displaced Person Camps; legal and illegal migration to Palestine/Israel and the restrictive immigration policies of the West. Includes archive film. |
