Abstract

It is the summer of 1939, and Kay Miniver is returning home in the small village of Belham outside of London. At the train station she is met by railroad supervisor Mr. Ballard, who asks if he can give the name "Mrs. Miniver" to his new hybrid rose, which he plans on entering in a local flower contest. Kay agrees. Later Vin Miniver, her son, falls in love with Carol Beldon. The couple becomes engaged just as WWII begins. Then Clem Miniver goes off with the other men of the village in little boats to help hundreds of thousands of retreating British soldiers stranded on the beaches of Dunkirk. In his absence Kay Miniver discovers a wounded German pilot outside her house. Holding a gun on him she turns him over to authorities. When Clem Miniver returns, Vin Miniver and Carol are married. During an air raid, Carol is machine-gunned to death. Vin Miniver later flies with his RAF squadron against the enemy.
