Abstract

The workoholic sewing-machine operator Morris Rothstein, makes many sacrifices in order that his children may reap the benefit of his labor. In later years, when he has attained wealth and a comfortable position, he finds that his children no longer consider him in their plans, and his daughter-in-law takes over the management of the household. Completely disillusioned, Rothstein decides to destroy the fruit of all his labor, but his father stops him by reminding him that his children's behavior is no different from that of his own and that he too once treated his father in the same manner. He affirms that "we must not destroy what we have built. We must go on."
